Setting the Paper Drawer Auto Selection On/Off

To "Settings/Registration Table"

Paper sources for which Paper Drawer Auto Selection is set to 'On' are used for Automatic Paper Selection and Auto Drawer Switching. You can set which paper sources can be used for Automatic Paper Selection and Auto Drawer Switching with each function, such as copying and printing.

  • Automatic Paper Selection (APS): The machine automatically selects the appropriate paper size (paper source) when you start printing.
  • Auto Drawer Switching (ADS): If the selected paper source runs out of paper during a print job, the machine automatically selects another paper source with the same paper size, and continues printing.

  • If you select [Copy] in Step 2, you can specify the [Consider Paper Type] settings.

Paper sources with Paper Drawer Auto Selection set to 'On' and loaded with the following paper types, are eligible for use with Automatic Paper Selection and Auto Drawer Switching.

Auto Drawer Switching If there is a paper source with the same paper size, type, and color, the machine automatically feeds from that paper source and continues printing. If there is a paper source with the same paper size and the paper type can be used with Automatic Paper Selection, the machine automatically feeds from that paper source and continues printing.

*1 Depending on the paper size, such as custom size paper, the paper may not be eligible for use with Automatic Paper Selection.
*2 White color sheets of paper equivalent to Thin, Plain 1, Plain 2, or Recycled paper.
*3 Paper equivalent to Thin, Plain 1, Plain 2, Recycled, Color, Heavy 1, or Heavy 2 paper.

  • Printer (Printing from a Computer)

Paper sources with Paper Drawer Auto Selection set to 'On' and loaded with following paper types, are eligible for use with Automatic Paper Selection and Auto Drawer Switching.

Automatic Paper Selection All paper types available on the machine are eligible for use with Automatic Paper Selection if they match the paper types specified on the printer driver. Thin, Plain 1, Plain 2, Recycled, Color, Heavy 1, Heavy 2, Custom Paper*3
Auto Drawer Switching*5 If there is a paper source with the same paper size, type, and color, the machine automatically feeds from that paper source and continues printing. If there is a paper source with the same paper size and the paper type can be used with Automatic Paper Selection, the machine automatically feeds from that paper source and continues printing.

*3 Paper equivalent to Thin, Plain 1, Plain 2, Recycled, Color, Heavy 1, or Heavy 2 paper.
*4 Specify the type of paper in [Paper Type] on the printer driver.
*5 If a specific paper source is set for [Paper Source] on the printer driver, Auto Drawer Switching is not performed.

  • Access Stored Files (Mail Box)

  • Printing documents stored from the printer driver:

If you perform printing without changing settings on the machine, perform the same operations as Printer (Printing from a Computer).

If you change settings on the machine and print, perform the same operations described for printing scanned documents stored in the machine.

  • Access Stored Files (Advanced Box, Other Advanced Boxes on the Network, Memory Media)

Paper sources with Paper Drawer Auto Selection set to 'On' and loaded with the following paper types, are eligible for use with Automatic Paper Selection and Auto Drawer Switching.

Auto Drawer Switching*6 If there is a paper source with the same paper size and the paper type can be used with Automatic Paper Selection, the machine automatically feeds from that paper source and continues printing.

*1 Depending on the paper size, such as custom size paper, the paper may not be eligible for use with Automatic Paper Selection.
*3 Paper equivalent to Thin, Plain 1, Plain 2, Recycled, Color, Heavy 1, or Heavy 2 paper.
*6 Auto Drawer Switching cannot be performed if a paper source is specified.

  • Receive/Fax

Paper sources with Paper Drawer Auto Selection set to 'On' and loaded with A3, B4, A4, A4R, B5, B5R, A5, or A5R size paper, are eligible for use with Automatic Paper Selection and Auto Drawer Switching. The available paper types are shown in the table below.

*7 Paper equivalent to Thin, Plain 1, Plain 2, Recycled, or Color paper.

  • Other (Printing Reports)

Paper sources with Paper Drawer Auto Selection set to 'On' and loaded with A3, B4, A4, or A4R size paper, are eligible for use with Automatic Paper Selection and Auto Drawer Switching. The available paper types are shown in the table below.

Auto Drawer Switching If there is a paper source with the same paper type and color, the machine automatically feeds from that paper source and continues printing.

*2 White color sheets of paper equivalent to Thin, Plain 1, Plain 2, or Recycled paper.
*7 Paper equivalent to Thin, Plain 1, Plain 2, Recycled, or Color paper.

  1. Press (Settings/Registration) → [Function Settings] → [Common] → [Paper Feed Settings] → [Paper Drawer Auto Selection On/Off].
  1. Select [Copy], [Printer], [Access Stored Files], [Receive/Fax], or [Other].

If the fax board is installed, [Receive/Fax] is displayed.
If the fax board is not installed, [Receive] is displayed.

[Other] is used for specifying the paper source for printing reports.

If you select [Copy], you can set [Consider Paper Type] to 'On' or 'Off'.
  1. Select [On] or [Off] for the multi-purpose tray and the other paper sources → press [OK].

Details of each item are shown below.

[On]: The paper source is eligible for APS/ADS.
[Off]: The paper source is ineligible for APS/ADS.

The numbers on the screen represent the following paper sources:


The Cassette Feeding Unit-AD1 and Paper Deck Unit-B1 are attached.

  • Regardless of the multi-purpose tray setting, you cannot select 'Off' for all of the paper sources at the same time. At least one of the paper sources, besides the multi-purpose tray must be set to 'On'.
  • If you selected [Printer] in step 2, the Multi-Purpose Tray icon ( ) will not be displayed on the paper selection screen.
